Tomi Adeyemi is a Nigerian-American writer and creative writing coach based in San Diego, California. Born in 1993, Adeyemi is well known for her book Children of Blood and Bone. Her book features Yoruba cosmology from her study of the orishas in Brazil. Ironically, as a first-generation immigrant to America, she shied away from her culture until she could no longer run away from it.

This is the first trilogy published by Henry Holt Books for Young Readers. The second part of the book is expected to be out early 2019.  Her father was a physician but he found employment in the States as a taxi driver whilst he waited to transfer his qualifications. Her mother worked as a cleaner.  Her African parents were not understanding of her decision to become an author, but they loved and supported her nonetheless.

Her book debuted at number 1 on the New York Times Young Adult Hardcover Bestseller list. It is reported that Adeyemi scored a million dollar book + movie deal for her trilogy. Adeyemi is the third African novelist to land a seven-figure deal. Novelist Imbolo Mbue was the first, followed by  Yaa Gyasi. She offers the first six chapters of her book here.  Her website confirms that the movie is currently in development with Karen Rosenfelt and Wyck Godfrey as producers.  This trilogy is published by Macmillan's Children Publishing Group while the movie rights were acquired by Fox 2000.

According to her website, 'after graduating Harvard University with an honours degree in English literature, she received a fellowship that allowed her to study West African mythology and culture in Salvador, Brazil. When she’s not working on her novels or watching Scandal, she can be found blogging and teaching creative writing to her 4,500 subscribers at tomiadeyemi.com. Her website has been named one of the 101 best websites for writers by Writer’s Digest'.
