Cooking and Culture Examined by Edmonton Filmmaker
We meet Shawn Tse, a local filmmaker and digital video producer in the first instalment of videos which celebrate our diversity through the meals we eat and the conversations we have while making that traditional meal. Seconds, Please! Is a six-part video-based series documenting stories and conventional recipes from Canadian immigrant families. Tse is dinning with Sarah and Rose a family originally from South Sudan. Our hearts are touched as we listen to Sarah’s narration of her journey and experiences in Canada while cooking Mullah Akhdir, a Sudanese delicacy. We are moved as she shares her life experiences with her daughter, a second generation Canadian immigrant. The wisdom Sarah passes down is similar to ours, we reflect on how similar we are as Canadians.
In the second episode, Tse explores the Canadian immigration experience through father and daughter combo Pol and Kat. Pol teaches Tse and his daughter Kat to make kare kare a Filipino delight. Kare kare is a favourite among the Filipino community in Canada. Kare kare is a Philippine stew complemented with a thick, savoury peanut sauce. It is made from a variation base of stewed oxtail, pork hocks, calves, pig feet, beef stew meat and occasionally or tripe. Tse's brilliance comes across in the conversations and talks about multiculturalism in Edmonton.
On CBC Radio Active recently, Tse said “ I think food is a kind of way to start the conversation, but then hopefully with this; we can dive a little deeper into how diverse and impressive (we are) and how we should maybe celebrate how different we are as Canadians –different but also similar".
